A man from Brooklyn has been convicted of murder for shooting his ex-girlfriend in the head at close range while she was out with her 3-month-old daughter in a stroller.
Isaac Algro was found guilty on Thursday in a Manhattan courtroom for the attack that took place on June 29, 2022. This incident happened six years after he fatally shot Azshia Johnson.
Following several weeks of trial, the jury reached a decision within two hours. At 26 years old, Algro now faces serious consequences for this act.
“This brutal execution devastated all of Mr. Johnson’s loved ones, including his devoted family who attended the trial every day,” stated Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr. in his remarks.
He added, “I hope this conviction gives them a sense of justice.”
Johnson had been living in a domestic violence shelter in East Harlem to ensure the safety of herself and her children from Algro. He had a history of stalking and abusing her, prompting her to file multiple police reports against him.
Despite her fears, Johnson’s family wanted to see if there was a chance for her daughter to have a relationship with her father, leading to a brief meeting with Algro before the tragic incident occurred.
This was only the second time Algro had seen the young child when he took Johnson’s life. He fled the scene and was apprehended two days later.
“Mr. Algro inflicted extensive physical and emotional abuse on Ms. Azshia Johnson before she ultimately had the immense courage to leave him to protect herself and her children,” Bragg stated.
DeSoto, Johnson’s mother, expressed her relief on social media, celebrating that justice had finally been served for her daughter, who had dreams of becoming a pediatric nurse.
“No one can say anything negative about DA BRAGG TO ME! His entire team is amazing!” she wrote.
“My little girl served justice and put this monster where it belongs!”
Sentencing for Algro is set for June 18. His attorney has not provided any comments regarding the case.
