Bill Belichick’s Challenging Start at UNC

It’s hard to believe, but just five games into the season, Bill Belichick and the University of North Carolina have had to publicly affirm their commitment to the college football program. What a roller coaster this season has turned out to be for him and the Tar Heels!

Belichick’s first season as a college head coach has been anything but smooth, marked by a 2-3 record, some pretty tough losses, and whispers that the university might soon consider parting ways with him.

Despite Belichick asserting his dedication to UNC, one former NFL player isn’t surprised by the turmoil unfolding in Chapel Hill. Damian Harris, a former running back for the New England Patriots and now a college football analyst, noted, “I’m not surprised. Bill’s never coached college football before.” He acknowledged Belichick’s achievements in the NFL but pointed out that success doesn’t always translate to the college game.

Harris discussed how many NFL coaches who transition to college football often take on coordinator roles instead, as they tend to have a deeper understanding of the intricate strategies involved. Yet, moving straight from head coach in the NFL to another head coach position in college comes with an entirely different set of challenges.

Indeed, college football requires much more than just playcalling. Coaches must juggle multiple responsibilities that go beyond game strategy, something that Harris believes could pose difficulties for Belichick, who has recently entered a new personal relationship as well.

“It’s a different game now,” Harris explained, reflecting on his own experience with Belichick. He expressed concern that the distractions of recruiting and maintaining relationships might detract from Belichick’s focus on winning.

Harris shared his belief that the best route for an NFL coach moving to college would be through a coordinator position, similar to Matt Patricia’s current role at Ohio State. Patricia had his own journey, moving from the Patriots to head coach of the Lions, but eventually returning to college as a highly successful defensive coordinator.

Belichick, however, has never aimed to be a coordinator. After 23 years leading the Patriots, he was eager for a new challenge, and when the opportunity at UNC arose, he jumped at it. But Harris doesn’t see Belichick bringing immediate success to the Tar Heels.

As Harris put it, “It’s a different game, and I don’t think Belichick is suited for the long haul here.” He noted that it’s not due to any lack of capability on Belichick’s part; it’s simply that college football has evolved and demands a different skill set, especially when it comes to managing off-field responsibilities.

While Harris has been covering Belichick and the college football scene this year, he’s particularly focused on the No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide, especially as they gear up to face No. 11 Tennessee. He’s involved in a unique event with Dr. Pepper that aims to connect rival college cities, representing Alabama along with Josh Dobbs, a former Volunteers quarterback now with the Patriots, during game day interactions.
