Former Pelosi aide challenges Jeffries’ leadership of House Democrats

Nancy Pelosi, the former House Speaker, has expressed doubts about House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries. She feels he isn’t quite tapping into the current political climate, especially with Trump around. “It’s like he’s handing us this incredible opportunity,” she remarked, adding that they may be wasting it.

Etienne, an aide who worked with Pelosi, previously contributed to the Democratic messaging during Trump’s presidency. She noted that while Jeffries is doing well in many respects and holds a lot of respect among New York Democrats, he’s missing key chances to push back against Trump.

Watching this unfold, Etienne mentioned a speech Jeffries gave but pointed out, somewhat critically, that he seemed to miss the mark on conveying his message effectively. “If you don’t let people know what you want to communicate, how can you keep them engaged?” she said, emphasizing the need for a stronger stance.

Supporters of Jeffries countered her assessment, arguing that the focus on Trump’s low approval ratings and the party’s restlessness is a positive sign. They pointed out Jeffries recently called out House Republicans for stalling their legislative agenda amid backlash against Trump’s policies on Medicaid and food aid cuts.

Still, Etienne’s remarks stand out, especially coming from someone who once worked closely with former leadership. She acknowledged some victories for Democrats, like Senator Cory Booker’s recent impactful speech, but she found the protest during Trump’s address to Congress to be notably disappointing for the party and for Jeffries himself.

She observed, “After his speech, the media was more fixated on the protests than the content of what Trump was saying, which isn’t ideal for a party leader.” This, she felt, reflected poorly on Jeffries.

Both Pelosi and Jeffries’ offices stated that he frequently consults her for advice. However, a spokesperson for Jeffries pushed back against the notion that he hasn’t done enough to unify the party. Meanwhile, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee defended Jeffries, suggesting their communication has been satisfactory.

A House Democratic aide mentioned Jeffries conducted several calls preparing for Trump’s speeches, ensuring the messaging aligned with the party’s goals. Still, criticisms of his leadership style persist, with some describing it as overly passive or lacking direction.

Critics argue that regardless of the leader, if the Democratic platform isn’t resonating with voters, it might not matter who’s at the helm.

Pelosi’s team has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding these critiques.
