Former Politico reporters say outlet quashed negative Biden stories

Two former Politico reporters have spoken candidly about the efforts their bosses made during their time at the news organization to delay or completely quash reporting on the Biden family.

Marc Caputo and Tara Palmeri, now journalists at Axios and Pac, respectively, reflected on their time at Politico on Palmeri's podcast, “Somebody's Gotta Win.”

Caputo criticized Politico's “unfortunate headline” that downplayed Hunter Biden's laptop scandal during the 2020 election.

“So I knew at the time that my former employer, Politico, did them no favors,” Caputo said in an exchange shared on YouTube Thursday. “I was covering Biden at the time, and I remember coming to my editor and saying, 'I need to write about Hunter Biden's laptop.'” I was told that it was from the department. Don't write about laptops, don't talk about laptops, don't tweet about laptops, and that's all Politico ended up writing. At least, disinformation that can charitably be called misinformation. ”

Caputo wrote in an open letter signed by 51 intelligence officials declaring that materials from Hunter Biden's laptop “contained every bit of evidence” that “Hunter Biden's story is Russian disinformation.” He was referring to a Politico report with the headline, “Says Dozens of Former Intelligence Officials.” It's Russian intelligence. ” The report was released just days after the New York Post published a bombshell report about the laptop in October 2020.

Caputo also cited a report he wrote in 2019 stemming from a counter-investigation by then-candidate Joe Biden's rival Democratic campaign about Hunter's “tax liens” related to his work for Ukrainian energy company Burisma. It also shed light on books.

“And I was like, 'The former vice president's son was hit with a huge tax lien during the time he was working on this controversial oil issue or natural gas issue in Ukraine.' “I wrote a story about him stalking my father on the campaign trail,” Caputo said, “and they didn't give me any explanation for it.” General experience, obviously the public doesn't know about those things.”

When contacted by Fox News Digital, Mr. Caputo provided a video showing the original Word document created on May 8, 2019 of the tax lien report regarding Hunter Biden.

Palmeri similarly shared with Politico her experience with the “major reporting” she did about then-President Biden's son. She talked about the Hunter Biden gun case, where he was charged with a felony for lying about drug use on a gun form.

“I spent three months on it, went to the laptop shop, did all the reporting in Delaware, ran it all. But, sure, it was, it had to be pretty It had to be 100% nailed,'' Palmeri told Caputo. “I had everything, you know, the police report…I'm a solid reporter, but I think a different kind of article would have been published a little earlier.”

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Palmeri detailed how his bosses hamstrung his story before it was published.

“It certainly took a lot of effort to get that report published. It was always like, 'Hey, when are we going to do this? Hey, when are we going to get this out? Hey, when?' ”Are you going to do this? It was so difficult that there was kind of a known feeling that it was going to be difficult to report something really tough on the Biden administration and his family. Palmeri told Fox News Digital. “And I think when you have a culture where reporters have to try too hard, it just creates the impression that they're not interested in that kind of reporting. And at the end of the day, we're the ones who get published. Support our work. ”

Palmeri said she first obtained the police report shortly after Biden took office in late January 2021, but her story was not made public. Late March 2021.

“If this was President Trump's child, I think it would have been published sooner,” Palmeri said. “I had to work really hard to like it. 'Hey, what's going on in the story? Hey, what's going on in the story? Like, what's going on in the story? We've given the White House about a week to respond, but we don't know if that applies to President Trump's story. ”

The former Politico journalist continued that the Biden administration's “honeymoon period” was a factor in the slow pace of reporting.

“I think a lot of people, including reporters, wanted to get on the good side of the new administration,” Palmeri said. “So I could understand the reluctance to put out something like that within the first few months.”

Palmeri also suggested that her bosses would not cover the story unless she could connect it to a federal agency.

“It had to be about the fact that the Secret Service was involved,” Palmeri told FOX News Digital. “I think it's pretty shocking that the president's son was involved in a domestic dispute where a gun was dumped next to his school, and the police had to intervene.”

“I think they liked that angle because I think it increases gravity.” of the situation. The fact that the Secret Service may have been improperly used to conceal the fact that the gun was discovered and could have been a crime if used by someone else. The whole fact that he lied on the gun form that I had. I had a gun shape and pointed out that he was lying on it. But in this article, we downplayed that and said, “Many people lie on gun forms and aren't prosecuted for it,” but that's true. But that doesn't mean the headline wasn't “Hunter Biden Lies About Gun Shape,” which is a felony. Even though I had the shape of the gun he lied about, it wasn't a headline,” she continued.

“They felt this case was worthy of publication. Basically, they needed to put on the spot that federal authorities were involved and that they abused their power. The crime itself wasn't the point. It simply wasn't worth reporting, as it was.'' That's all,'' Palmeri continued. “To be fair, they wanted the story to end on a strong note, but they also felt they needed to elevate the story beyond the crime, which is obvious from the format. We wanted the Secret Service elements to I had to find out.'' Part. “
