Former U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda, who was elected in 2006 to represent Kansas’ 2nd Congressional District, was declared the winner of Tuesday night’s Democratic primary.

The Sunflower State seat is currently held by Republican Rep. Jake LaTurner, who is not seeking reelection this fall.

The seat has been held by Republicans for nearly three decades, except for Boyda’s two-year term that ended in 2008.

Now that the Kansas Supreme Court has ruled that voting is not a fundamental right, what happens next for voters?

Boyda was the last Democrat to hold a Republican-controlled seat in the House and served on the House Agriculture and Armed Services committees for one term.
