Former sheriff's staff member taken into custody for aiding boyfriend's escape from Orleans jail

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has shared that a former employee of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO) has been arrested. The individual, Dariana Burton, aged 28, was taken into custody on Monday for allegedly helping Derrick Groves escape from custody. Reports suggest that Burton is romantically involved with Groves.

A warrant for her arrest was issued back on May 27 due to conspiracy charges related to a simple escape. She was apprehended by the US Marshals in New Orleans. The arrest affidavit indicates that Burton may have coordinated communication with individuals outside the prison and provided relevant details regarding the escape.

It was also mentioned that Burton had been in a “distinguished relationship” with Groves for about three years. She worked at the OPSO from August 2022 until March 2023. There were prior allegations of misconduct and the potential smuggling of contraband into the prison, but these were denied by the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office.

In response to the situation, Murrill emphasized the commitment to pursuing all those involved in assisting criminals, stating that they will find and prosecute those who assisted in such matters.
