Former College Football Star Faces Cancer Battle
Steven Garcia, who played as a quarterback for four years at the University of South Carolina, recently revealed on social media that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. At 38 years old, this diagnosis comes after a series of emergency room visits and imaging tests.
In his announcement, Garcia mentioned that he, along with the help of his wife Maria, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign that has successfully raised almost $100,000. He expressed optimism about overcoming this situation despite the diagnosis and noted that he will soon consult a specialist for further treatment plans.
Garcia, while sharing the GoFundMe link on Facebook, said he wasn’t thrilled about publicizing his health issues but emphasized the importance of awareness and testing. “If there’s one lesson to be learned, it’s get tested. Don’t hesitate to visit your doctor’s office when you’re feeling off,” he urged, expressing his gratitude for the ongoing support.
His football career is notable; Garcia threw for 7,597 yards and 49 touchdowns during his time with the Gamecocks. He notably led the SEC as a sophomore with 239 completions in 2009, helping his team reach the 22nd spot in the final season poll. The following year, he recorded a personal best with 3,059 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Garcia is tied for third place in the school’s history for wins as a quarterback, and after college, he played in various leagues, including the CFL and AFL.
University of South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer shared his thoughts on the situation, stating, “I’m praying for Steven.” He added that he spoke with Garcia recently and was encouraged by his positive mindset.
Beamer reassured Garcia of the team’s support, stating, “We just have to pray hard for him now.”
