Former Teacher Arrested on Child Abuse Charges
A 64-year-old former elementary school teacher from New Jersey has been arrested on several charges related to child sexual abuse. Mark Paulino, known for dressing as Santa at various public and private events, was apprehended following an investigation into illegal online activities, according to prosecutors.
Mercer County Prosecutor Janetta D. Mabry stated that Paulino faces multiple charges: second-degree distribution of child sexual abuse material, second-degree possession of such material with intent to distribute, third-degree possession of child sexual abuse material, and endangering a child’s welfare. The investigation began after the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit received a tip about illegal uploads from Hamilton Township.
The investigation revealed that Paulino, who recently retired from teaching in Hamilton Township School District, had been promoting his role as a Santa performer on his website. This raised concerns due to his interactions with children.
Law enforcement worked diligently to obtain a search warrant for Paulino’s home, given the gravity of the allegations. On Friday, detectives executed the search warrant, assisted by the Hamilton Police SWAT Team and other units from the prosecutor’s office.
During the search, several pieces of evidence were seized, although specific details about the materials have not been disclosed since the investigation is ongoing.
Following his arrest, prosecutors requested that Paulino be held without bail until his trial. He was taken into custody without any issues. Authorities are urging anyone with pertinent information regarding the case to reach out to the ICAC division or provide anonymous tips through their office.
Mabry also emphasized the importance of reporting any suspected inappropriate online contact or exploitation involving children.
