Former Teen Vogue Editor Delivers Speech About Her Dismissal, Unintentionally Highlights Reasons for Her Termination

In the mid-2010s, Teen Vogue shifted from targeting teenage girls to embracing more radical political viewpoints. Recently, senior management at parent company Condé Nast seemed to recognize this misstep. In early November, they announced plans for Teen Vogue to be integrated into the larger Vogue brand, leading to the dismissal of several employees, including political editor Rex McMenamin.

McMenamin openly addressed the layoffs on social media, stating, “Today, along with several other staff members from other departments, I was let go from Teen Vogue, and today is my last day.” He noted a shift in the staffing structure, indicating there would be no political team remaining at the magazine after his departure.

McMenamin expressed concern about the diversity within the editorial team, highlighting that, out of eight staffers let go, five were women of color, and he was the only transgender employee. “I was the only one left,” he said, reflecting on the dynamics of representation at the publication.

As a white non-binary individual, he mentioned that he found pride in Teen Vogue having women of color in leadership roles over the years, which he viewed as a positive in a predominantly white industry. His comments, however, sparked some debate about whether celebrating these achievements should solely focus on racial diversity.

McMenamin pointed out that Teen Vogue had gained attention during the first Trump administration for its willingness to tackle bold topics, from global issues in Palestine to discussions on transgender rights. He seemed to imply that the magazine had chosen a more controversial path that led to its current state.

While covering topics that included sexual health and rights, Teen Vogue has published guides on subjects like anal sex and access to contraception, which reflects its deep engagement with complex contemporary issues.

Despite McMenamin’s dismissal, he voiced concerns about how the media landscape is evolving, especially for marginalized workers. He criticized the dismissal of diverse voices within media spaces and linked it to a broader trend of corporate decisions undermining representation and identity.

This recent shift leaves American teenage girls minus the political insights McMenamin believes he provided.
