Erie County Chairman Jeremy Zellner announced Nowak’s death in a TwitterX post on Sunday.

“On a day of great change for the Democratic Party, communities across Western New York are mourning the loss of one of the greatest elected officials we have ever had,” he said. “Congressman Nowak’s legacy lives on through his tireless efforts to bring resources back from Washington to help build and shape our communities today.”

Nowak is known for bringing nearly $1 billion in federal infrastructure aid to Buffalo at a time when the region was in decline due to industrial decline, including the closure of Bethlehem Steel in 1983, and was a strong advocate of waterfront development during his time in Congress.

“I have sought to align local needs with federal opportunities to mitigate these impacts and preserve the quality of life in Western New York,” he said in announcing his retirement from Congress. Buffalo News “This has been the most satisfying part of my representation,” he reported.

Nowak represented western New York from 1975 to 1992 and is the father of New York Supreme Court Justice Henry Nowak Jr.
