Tragic Passing of Former UFC Fighter Godofredo “Pepay” Castro
Godofredo “Pepay” Castro, a former UFC fighter, has reportedly died by suicide while incarcerated in a Florida prison.
He was just 38 years old.
Castro was discovered unresponsive at the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale around 8 p.m. during a routine check, as reported by various sources.
A spokesperson from the ministry confirmed that he was found with a sheet wrapped around his neck.
Emergency services were summoned, and Castro was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he sadly passed away.
Authorities believe there was no foul play involved in his death, although the official cause is still under investigation.
Rony Mariano Bezerra, a former teammate from TUF Brazil, was quick to share his condolences on social media. He expressed that Castro couldn’t manage the pressures he faced, illustrating a broader issue about mental health among martial artists.
Castro had been in custody since June 30, following his arrest in Deerfield Beach, Florida, related to severe domestic violence allegations, including kidnapping and strangulation.
Reports indicated that during a domestic dispute, he assaulted his wife, with details showcasing a distressing pattern of violence.
Visible injuries were noted by responding officers, further corroborating the woman’s account of the incident.
Though Castro had pleaded not guilty to all charges, the legal proceedings were still ongoing.
Gaudenio Santiago, who represented Castro’s wife, commented on the gravity of a death in custody, urging public sensitivity towards the grieving family and cautioning against harmful speculation.
Originally from Brazil, Castro participated in 11 UFC bouts after competing on “The Ultimate Fighter Brazil, Season 1,” with a record of 5 wins and 6 losses in the UFC and 13 wins and 7 losses overall. His latest fight occurred in February 2022.
