Leah Thomas Receives Voice of Inspiration Award

Leah Thomas, the transgender swimmer, has emerged from a period of relative silence. On Thursday evening in Los Angeles, the former UPenn swimmer, who was born William Thomas, made a striking appearance in a purple dress and heels, attending the 2025 Violet Visionary Awards to accept the “Voice of Inspiration Award.”

This event was put together by Rainbow Labs, a nonprofit organization, and enjoyed backing from several local sports groups, such as the Dodgers and LA Football Club.

Before accepting her award, Thomas engaged with the audience, taking part in a couple of drag performances. A video montage showcased her journey from competing on the men’s team as William Thomas to transitioning to the women’s team as Leah Thomas in 2022. The presentation highlighted her struggles for acceptance amid various challenges.

“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at Rainbow Institute for bringing me and all of you here and putting this all together,” she said, noting the emotional impact of her journey.

At 26, Thomas reflected on her past, recalling the fears and uncertainties she faced as a young transgender individual. “I was so excited about the prospect of being able to be myself, but I was so scared to take that step,” she shared, emphasizing her feelings of isolation and doubt.

Thomas credited her success to the support from transgender mentors who helped her reconcile her identity with her athletic career. “Thanks to so many amazing trans mentors, I found the courage to be myself and compete as a trans woman,” she stated.

Activism and Challenges in Sports

Thomas’s participation in women’s sports has stirred considerable debate. As the 2024 election approached, it was noted that then-President-elect Donald Trump was vocal in supporting athletes like Riley Gaines, who opposed male participation in women’s events. Trump’s subsequent executive order aimed to ban biological males from competing in women’s sports, leading to significant dialogue on the subject.

Despite receiving harassment and violent messages online, Thomas expressed gratitude for supportive organizations like Rainbow Labs and highlighted the need for resources for young transgender individuals.

Throughout the ceremony, speakers advocated for the LGBTQ+ community, shedding light on the struggles faced by transgender individuals. Notably, approximately 70% of Americans are against transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, which presents ongoing challenges for individuals like Thomas.

Nevertheless, she remains steadfast, declaring that her role as an influential transgender figure is “my purpose.” In her concluding remarks, she expressed her wish to serve as a guiding light for the transgender community.

Cultural Shifts and Continued Advocacy

As reactions to Thomas’s presence and legacy unfolded, the event’s atmosphere seemed to reflect broader cultural efforts toward LGBTQ+ acceptance. Daisy Chavez, a spokesperson for the LA Football Club, spoke about their commitment to supporting queer individuals while affirming their long-standing presence in sports.

After the awards were given out, the ceremony culminated in a celebration featuring a performance by a gender non-conforming trans woman, creating a memorable, if unexpected, finale.
