Vikings Mourn the Loss of Former Player Roniel Whitaker

The Vikings experienced another heartbreaking loss on Sunday. Former defensive back Roniel Whitaker has passed away at the age of 46, as confirmed by the team.

Details surrounding his death have not been shared.

Whitaker played two seasons with the Vikings, participating in 27 games and notching up 31 tackles between 2006 and 2007.

In a heartfelt statement, Whitaker’s family expressed their heartbreak, describing him as someone who led a life filled with “passion, perseverance, and purpose.” They emphasized that, while many recognized him for his athletic achievements, it was his generous spirit, unwavering loyalty, and profound love for his family that truly defined him.

“He was not just a player but a protector, a mentor, bringing strength and laughter to everyone fortunate enough to know him,” the family shared. “During this incredibly tough time, we ask for your thoughts, love, and privacy as we navigate this profound loss and celebrate the life of someone who meant so much to us all.”

Funeral and memorial details are expected to be announced soon by his family.

Whitaker had initially played college football at Virginia Tech before joining the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Buccaneers in 2003. He suited up for the Vikings in 2006, making an impact during his rookie season with four game appearances.

After spending the 2008 offseason with the Lions, he eventually concluded his career in the Canadian Football League.

From 2014 to 2018, Whitaker also took on the role of coaching defensive backs at Chanhassen High School, while running his own venture, Whittaker Group LLC, since 2011.

Tragically, this news comes as the Vikings grapple with another loss. The team is still processing the earlier death of 25-year-old Rondale Moore, who died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Indiana just days before Whitaker’s passing.
