Former Wales scrum-half Rhys Webb given four-year ban for doping positive | Wales rugby union team

Former Wales scrum-half Reece Webb has been banned for four years after testing positive for a banned substance, the French Anti-Doping Agency (AFLD) has confirmed.

The 35-year-old Webb, who joined French club Biarritz last year, was provisionally suspended in July last year after testing positive for a growth hormone. Webb maintains his innocence but analysis of his B sample confirmed the result.

The retroactive suspension effectively ends Webb’s playing career because it expires in 2027 when he turns 38. It also bars him from working as a coach or in any other sports administration role during the suspension.

Webb, who has 40 caps for Wales and two for the British and Irish Lions and played one game for Biarritz before serving his suspension, has previously played for Bridgend, Aberavon, Ospreys, Toulon and Bath.

In a statement released to French media, the AFLD confirmed that Webb was banned from “participating in any capacity in any competition sanctioned or organised by any organisation that is a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code or its affiliates”.
