Former White House Press Secretary Testifies Before House Oversight Committee
Karine Jean Pierre, the former White House press secretary, testified before the House Oversight Committee on Friday, addressing allegations that senior staff attempted to downplay signs of President Joe Biden’s mental decline. Jean Pierre, who served as the administration’s primary spokesperson from May 2022 until the end of Biden’s term, has gained notable recognition for her appearances before the committee.
The hearing started at 10 a.m., and Jean Pierre chose not to engage with reporters on her way to a private interview with a House investigator, which is expected to extend into the afternoon. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, is looking into whether the White House concealed Biden’s mental and physical health issues, as well as if any enforcement actions were authorized via autopen without the president’s complete knowledge.
Investigators are particularly interested in various orders signed by Biden, reportedly around 2,500 nearing the end of his presidency, many of which were executed automatically. The president previously stated that he made all decisions regarding these actions himself, while his allies have dismissed the investigation as politically motivated.
Jean Pierre defended Biden’s capabilities publicly after a difficult debate against Donald Trump in June 2024, asserting he was “as sharp as ever.” However, she distanced herself from the administration earlier this year, unlike many former aides still closely aligned with Biden.
In June, she announced a new book titled “Independence: Inside the Broken White House Outside the Party Line,” which is set to be released in October 2025. The book’s summary hints at exploring the three weeks leading up to Biden’s decision not to seek a second term and the perceived betrayal she experienced from the Democratic Party.
This announcement did not go unnoticed within Biden’s circle, where reactions varied. Some expressed skepticism, noting the contradiction in her distancing herself while positioning as an outsider. Others commented on her effectiveness but highlighted her lack of preparedness.
In a letter sent in late June, Comer requested that Jean Pierre participate in an interview, emphasizing her trusted position within Biden’s inner circle. He pointed out the serious implications of any attempts by White House staff to obscure the president’s health, suggesting that Congress might have to intervene if necessary.
