Tragic Passing of Former Wisconsin Tight End Jack Pugh
Former Wisconsin tight end Jack Pugh has unfortunately passed away.
Pugh died on Monday night at the young age of 24. He had been with the university from 2021 to 2023 but stepped away from football due to mental health issues, as noted by memorialsource.com.
“The Wisconsin Athletics family is heartbroken over Jack Pugh’s passing. He was a bright light and embodied the spirit of our football team,” the football program shared on its X account. “Beyond football, Jack genuinely cared for others and was cherished by his teammates and staff. He was set to receive his degree from UC Madison in 2025 and will forever hold a special place in our hearts.”
Pugh hailed from Columbus, Ohio, and made a name for himself as a four-star recruit when he joined the Badgers in 2021, according to ESPN rankings.
Interestingly, he focused mainly on basketball during his early high school years, which is how he managed to make the football team at Hilliard Bradley High School despite not playing football initially, as shared by The Athletic.
He didn’t see much action in his freshman year, and his appearances during the 2022 season were minimal. In December 2023, he announced he would take a “medical retirement” before the season officially began. Throughout his time at a Big Ten school, Pugh didn’t manage to catch a single pass.
“While my physical health wasn’t ideal, it was my mental health that motivated me to stop playing. After battling depression and substance abuse for years, I came to realize I deserved a better life and eventually found happiness,” he expressed, as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
“Football itself wasn’t the core issue, but I let everything around me distract me for far too long. This led me to a point where I struggled to find reasons to live,” he continued.
Pugh acknowledged the importance of prioritizing mental health after spending considerable time in a tough place. He thanked his coaches, teammates, friends, and family from @badgerfootball for assisting him in finding joy in life and developing his faith. “I will cherish these memories. Love you all,” he added.
Braylon Allen, a running back for the Jets and one of Pugh’s teammates over three seasons at Wisconsin, shared the news on his Instagram story. He later posted a heartfelt message on X at 7:54 PM ET on Monday, urging, “Protect your spirit.”
