Mike Rotunda, commonly recognized as IRS or Sister Irwin R., is not currently in hospice care, contrary to earlier reports.
On Wednesday, Rotunda’s family issued a statement to clarify the situation regarding the WWE Hall of Famer, who was mistakenly said to be in hospice over the weekend by his brother-in-law and former tag team partner, Barry Windham.
“We want to take a moment to clear up the confusion surrounding our father, Mike Rotunda,” the family said. The statement was shared on Mika Rotunda’s Facebook page.
“Yes, my uncle Barry mentioned that our dad was in hospice care while reflecting on a family tragedy from two years ago. However, he didn’t mean to imply that intentionally.
“My father is presently in a rehabilitation center, having suffered a severe heart attack on September 20th. He was in a coma for a week and spent over a month in the hospital. Thankfully, he is now in rehab, and our family is hopeful about his recovery.”
Windham reportedly made this mix-up during an interview with Bill Apter while discussing Rotunda’s late son, Bray Wyatt, who was also a former WWE star.
“It’s a bit challenging right now. Mike is in hospice right now,” Windham mentioned, addressing Rotunda, who is 67 years old. “Anyway, sending love to that family; it’s really tragic.”
While the family’s statement indicates that Rotunda’s condition is not as urgent as initially thought, they acknowledge that the wrestling icon has a “long road ahead.”
“We understand that it’s been a long journey so far, and there’s more to confront. Still, our faith in God is unwavering,” the statement continued. “Anyone who knows my dad understands his resilience, strong work ethic, and athleticism have helped him overcome not just this challenge but countless obstacles. If there’s one person I rely on, it’s Captain Mike.”
“We genuinely appreciate the overwhelming support, prayers, and love from both the wrestling community and our local area. Right now, we’re requesting privacy as we navigate this together but would gladly accept your continued prayers and positive energy for his healing.”
Another former WWE star, Leilani Kai, shared a photo of herself with Rotunda on social media, expressing her sadness over the situation.
“My heart is breaking to say that my friend Mike Rotunda has been placed in hospice care. 💔 This photo was taken earlier this year and is a treasured memory,” Kai, whose real name is Patti Seymour, wrote. “Please keep Mike and the Rotunda family in your thoughts and prayers. We love you, Mike. ❤️ #WrestlingFamily”
