Former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki Dead at 56

Susan Wojcicki, the former CEO of Google-owned YouTube, died on Friday at age 56 after a two-year battle with lung cancer.

“It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Susan Wojcicki. My beloved wife of 26 years and mother of our five children passed away today after a two-year battle with non-small cell lung cancer,” Dennis Troper wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.

“Susan was not only my best friend and life partner, she was a brilliant mind, a loving mother and a dear friend to so many,” Troper continued. “Her impact on our family and the world is immeasurable.”

“We are heartbroken but grateful for the time we had with her. Please keep our family in your thoughts as we get through this difficult time,” Troper concluded her post.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai also announced in a blog post on Friday that “Susan Wojcicki has passed away after two years of battling lung cancer.” Blog Post.

“I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work closely with Susan for so many years. She was so beloved by the team here. Her time on this earth was all too short, but she cherished every minute,” Pichai added.

Wojcicki called on governments around the world to enact stronger speech laws to restrict speech deemed “harmful” online in 2022. Her ominous message was that the path to “tougher regulation of online speech” would mean passing laws that ignore the First Amendment.

Wojcicki, an early associate of YouTube’s parent company Google, announced plans to step down as CEO of the video-sharing platform in February 2023 to focus on family, health and passion projects, after leaving a legacy of censoring independent creators and favoring corporate media.
