Founder of 'Squatty Potty' charged after long federal probe

The founder of Squatty Potty, Robert “Bobby” Edwards, has been indicted in Utah on federal charges related to child pornography, as announced by authorities. The 50-year-old was arrested after an investigation revealed he allegedly bought and received multiple images depicting child sexual abuse between March 2021 and November 2025, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah.

Edwards, who gained fame for creating a product aimed at improving bathroom experiences, was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 10 and taken into custody on February 12 in Washington County, Utah. At his initial court appearance, he pleaded not guilty and was remanded without bail by Judge Paul Kohler.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the investigation started in March 2021 when an undercover FBI agent observed Edwards in an online conference where child sexual abuse material was being shared. Later developments in May 2025 linked Edwards to further purchases of such material through an account on a platform called Only Payments.

On November 4, 2025, law enforcement executed a search warrant at his residence. During this search, they allegedly uncovered a cell phone in his car with multiple videos and images related to child sexual abuse, with some content downloaded just weeks prior. More images were reportedly found at his home.

Edwards launched Squatty Potty in 2011 with his family, inspired by a doctor’s recommendation to use a footstool for better bowel health. The product gained widespread attention after being featured on the show “Doctors,” and they later appeared on “Shark Tank,” where they successfully negotiated a deal with investor Lori Greiner, leading to significant sales shortly thereafter.

The company was sold to Aterian, Inc. in 2021. Following Edwards’ indictment, Aterian issued a statement clarifying that they no longer have any connection to him or his family after the sale. They expressed deep concern regarding the charges and stated that such allegations contradict their company values. The family’s previous mentions on their website have since been removed, emphasizing that they have no future role in the brand’s mission.
