A six-foot bull shark attacked four people off the coast of South Padre Island on Independence Day, leaving two with shark bite injuries.

Authorities say the man was the first of four people to die in an attack by a single bull shark.

A short time later, a DPS helicopter and Coast Guard crew began patrolling the coastal area in pursuit of the shark.

The injured woman was rescued from the Gulf of Mexico by two off-duty Border, Search, Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) officers. according to Laredo Sector staff member.
The other two shark attack victims did not require hospitalization.
Victoria Ramos, 18 years old, Said According to ValleyCentral.com, she said she felt the shark’s impact. Sharks are known to lunge at their prey before attacking. She described the attack as “being punched by a quarterback.” Paramedics treated the woman for minor lacerations and then released her on shore.
Game warden Capt. Chris Dowdy told The Associated Press that authorities believe all the attacks were caused by a single shark about 6 feet long.
Authorities have reported that shark attacks are “extremely rare.” Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. released a statement saying the county is “working closely with the mayor.”
We urge Patrick McNulty, the City of South Padre Island, and our state and federal partners to patrol our beaches and take appropriate action.”
“This is a horrific event, and the county will continue to be fully committed to providing all resources necessary to protect families, and we deeply appreciate the support of our city, state and federal partners in this effort,” Treviño added.
