Four Democrats in Tight House Contests Withdraw Support for Trans Athletes

Democratic Candidates Highlight Support for Girls’ Sports Amid Contradictory Records

Four Democratic candidates in closely contested House races are airing advertisements that position them as champions for girls’ sports. This comes despite their voting records which suggest otherwise. A report surfaced on Monday detailing this curious juxtaposition.

The candidates involved, which include two incumbents and two newcomers, are featuring ads that assert their readiness to diverge from party norms to stand up for female athletes, even though their histories tell a different story.

Representative Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), who is facing off against Republican Derek Merrin, openly engages with this topic in one of her ads. She states, “I voted with Republicans to keep transgender ideology out of our schools because parents know what’s best for their kids. And boys should not play in girls’ sports.” However, it’s noteworthy that Kaptur previously voted against the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, aligning with 205 fellow Democrats against the bill. Not to mention, she co-sponsors the Equality Act, which critics claim could blur sex distinctions in sports.

Representative Don Davis (D-NC) chose to vote “present” on the same piece of legislation that ultimately passed with a narrow margin of 218-206, aided by two Texas Democrats siding with Republicans. In his advertisement, Davis contends that states should hold the authority to establish regulations. “There should always be a safe and fair space for women and girls in sports,” he asserts. “That’s why I believe states should decide what’s right for protecting women and girls, and North Carolina has decided.”

Meanwhile, Sarah Trone Garriott, an Iowa state senator running against Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA), claims in her ad that she opposes “letting men in women’s locker rooms.” Despite this assertion, she previously voted against a 2022 bill restricting transgender athletes in girls’ sports, alongside a 2023 law that limited locker-room accessibility, both of which were sanctioned by Governor Kim Reynolds. Nunn’s campaign has retaliated with commercials accusing Garriott of altering her legislative history. Furthermore, Democratic candidate Lindsay James, who is vying for Ashley Hinson’s open Iowa seat, also opposed both measures.

As the midterms approach, many at-risk Democrats are adjusting their strategies. Conversely, candidates in more secure positions appear to be leaning in the opposite direction. For instance, Socialist nominee Claire Valdez has prioritized a “Trans Bill of Rights” if Democrats regain House control.

A recent analysis by the Pew Research Center revealed that 73 percent of Americans are worried about transgender athletes competing based on their birth sex, with 55 percent of Democrats expressing discomfort with this practice. The report sparked significant reactions on social media, where users criticized the candidates’ voting histories and raised questions about the timing of their ads.
