Small Plane Crash in Alaska Claims Four Lives
A small airplane tragically crashed into shallow waters near a remote coastal town in Alaska, resulting in the death of all four individuals on board.
The Piper PA-24-260 was en route to an airport in Seldovia after departing from Merrill Field Airport in Anchorage, which is about 136 miles away, when it went down, as stated in a release from the Alaska Department of Public Safety.
Alaska State Troopers received notification of the crash at 1:18 p.m. Emergency responders, including both State and Wildlife Troopers from Anchor Point, were deployed to the scene. Some were transported from Anchorage via helicopter, while others traveled by boat from the unincorporated community of Anchor Point, located roughly 40 miles north of Seldovia.
Upon a preliminary investigation, the responding Troopers confirmed that the aircraft was “completely submerged” in the water, according to the news release.
Later, around 6:30 p.m., the tide receded enough for the Troopers to recover the bodies of the four deceased adults from the plane. The remains were taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and identification. The names of those who lost their lives will not be publicly disclosed until their next of kin are informed.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will oversee the investigation into the crash’s cause, but it’s still uncertain what led to this tragic event.
Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) expressed her condolences regarding the accident on Thursday.
“I join Alaskans in grieving the loss of the four people who perished in the plane crash in Seldovia yesterday,” she shared on X. “This month has been a painful reminder of the realities of travel in Alaska. Our vast distances and lack of road connections mean we depend on aviation to knit our state together, which makes accidents like this all the more heartbreaking. I’m grateful to the Alaska State Troopers and all who responded to the scene, and I’m praying for their families, loved ones, and the Seldovia community as they mourn this terrible loss.”
This incident follows another aircraft crash last week at a remote military site in Western Alaska, which also resulted in all eight people on board losing their lives.
In that previous case, officials noted that the aircraft was attempting to land in heavy fog, and the pilots, relying solely on instruments due to poor visibility, faced difficulties in locating the gravel airstrip. The crash occurred during the plane’s second attempt to land after the initial attempt had to be aborted due to the low visibility. The aircraft went down approximately a third of a mile from the runway.
