Tragic Shooting in South Carolina Bar

A shooting early Sunday morning at a bar along the South Carolina coast resulted in four fatalities and more than 20 injuries, as reported by local authorities.

Willy’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island was crowded when sheriff’s deputies arrived, finding several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. St. Helena Island is located just north of Hilton Head Island.

Willie Talal, the bar owner, described hearing a “thud” followed by the sound of gunfire while inside. He mentioned that the atmosphere quickly shifted to chaos filled with screams and panic.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said they were alerted to the shooting shortly before 1 a.m. Upon their arrival, they encountered a large number of patrons, many of whom had been shot. Reports indicated that there were several hundred people at the bar when the incident occurred, leading many to flee to nearby businesses for safety.

Details from the Sheriff’s Office indicate that investigations are ongoing. At least 20 individuals are known to have been injured, with four listed as critically hurt. The names of those killed have not yet been released, as authorities await notification of their families.

The Sheriff’s Office also mentioned that they are looking into a person of interest related to the shooting.

During the event, which was a high school reunion, Talal expressed his sorrow over the incident. U.S. Representative Nancy Mace expressed her heartbreak over the violence, extending prayers to the victims and their families.

The Gullah community, which has roots tracing back to West Africans enslaved during the plantation era, is significant in the region, including St. Helena Island. Willie’s Bar and Grill promotes its Gullah-inspired cuisine and positions itself as a community hub.
