Flushing’s Iconic Star Reunites with Cast
Fran Drescher recently enjoyed a night out in New York, reuniting with Charles Shaughnessy, her co-star from “The Nanny.” Shaughnessy had a romantic connection with the show’s co-creator, Peter Marc Jacobson, making the reunion even more special.
In an Instagram post, Drescher, now 67, reflected on the occasion, captioning it with, “Four SUP OUTs with Mr. Sheffield and ‘The Nanny’ EPS. It’s definitely GR8 Night!”
She shared smiles with Shaughnessy, who is 70, and Jacobson, the showrunner who also helped create the series. Several other executive producers, including Robert Stellin, Diane Wilk, and Prudence Fraser, were also present.
Shaughnessy took to Instagram to share his excitement, suggesting a potential reunion with the cast. He wrote, “Let’s bring the band back together…?! A great night out with Susan and the ‘Nanny’ gang!”
Fans were quick to express their wishes for a show revival in the comments. One user implored, “Please restart! I want to see what the twins look like now. Watch Max and Fran become grandparents too. Love ‘The Nanny.’” Another comment echoed the sentiment, “Don’t tease us about ‘letting the band back together, Charlie 😭💕.”
The iconic sitcom aired from 1993 to 1999, chronicling the life of Fran Fine (Drescher), who becomes the caretaker for a widowed producer (Shaughnessy). Drescher later took on an executive production role towards the end of its run.
As the show’s 30th anniversary approaches in 2023, Drescher hinted at a possible revival during discussions with Sony, the parent company. She mentioned, “We really don’t know, but there are many options at the table, and we’re open to all of them.”
Renee Taylor, who played Sylvia, Fran’s mother, noted that she had to fight for the role initially. At first, the producers wanted a different type of actress for the character, but Drescher and Jacobson insisted on Taylor, who they had admired for some time.
“Fran saw me in a film and told me, ‘One day you’ll play my mother,’” Taylor recalled. The characters Sylvia and Mort were inspired by Drescher’s own parents, with Drescher herself depicting Sylvia in a flashback scene during the series.
While CBS considered other actresses, Drescher’s determination secured Taylor’s role, showcasing the show’s familial dynamics both on and off-screen. Taylor reminisced, “Even if we were playing a family, it felt like a real family.”
