US Sanctions Francesca Albanese Over Middle East Conflict
In response to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, various international organizations have attempted to challenge US policies that support their allies abroad. Interestingly, social media platform X is set to collaborate with the US to sanction one of its prominent critics, with these measures expected to start later this week.
Francesca Albanese, an Italian associate at the UN focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian situation, had her Verified Badge revoked on X this past Monday. The sanctions imposed by the US on her are slated to take effect very soon.
“This badge sends a clear message,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “Those who target US officials and allies, while supporting terrorism, will face consequences, no matter their position.”
On July 9th, in an official statement, Rubio highlighted that sanctions would be applied against Albanese, who serves as a special rapporteur regarding the human rights situation in Palestinian territories under occupation since 1967.
The sanctions, approved under executive order, focus on individuals involved in efforts by the International Criminal Court (ICC) that investigate or prosecute individuals without the state’s approval. According to the Treasury Department, these measures are expected to be active by August 8th.
Relatedly, Rubio emphasized in his comments that Albanese’s actions represented a “total infringement” of both US and Israeli sovereignty. He mentioned the established laws governing the ICC.
“This represents a significant achievement,” expressed Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, a group that campaigned against Albanese. “Her Verified Status on X afforded her numerous advantages like increased visibility and credibility. Now, this action indicates that repercussions await those who target US officials and businesses, regardless of their title.”
According to the official UN website, the Special Rapporteur role comprises independent experts monitoring and reporting on global human rights issues. These experts operate independently, not as UN staff, and are not compensated financially for their work.
The sanctions will freeze Albanese’s assets in the US, barring her entry into the country, and prevent US citizens from engaging in transactions with her.
