Wisconsin State Representative and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong recently sought to separate herself from progressive Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. This comes after she appeared on his livestream just days ago, which was also a fundraiser for her campaign.
In a discussion with MS NOW Reports, Hong was questioned about her late June appearance on Piker’s stream. She faced backlash from former Democratic Wisconsin Elections Commissioner Ann Jacobs, who criticized Piker, stating he was “going to sell out the Jews of Wisconsin for a few dollars.”
Hong responded by saying, “I condemn hatred, discrimination, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of dehumanization of communities.” She emphasized that her appearance on platforms like Piker’s doesn’t mean she endorses everything the hosts or their other guests may express. “It’s crucial for campaigns to reach voters where they are, even if those places are, well, a bit unconventional,” she added.
Moreover, she noted that if scrutiny were applied to all the speakers participating in these forums, one might mention other prominent figures, such as Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Wis., who had made extreme statements in the past.
She expressed the importance of engaging with voters in areas that may not be familiar with her campaign’s objectives, stating, “It’s essential for people to see that we’re fighting for working-class interests. Our elections need their attention.”
In the broader context, some House Democrats have reported that there is private discontent with Piker among party members, although many are reluctant to voice their criticisms publicly.
Piker has been a controversial figure nationally, receiving substantial backlash for previous remarks, such as suggesting that the U.S. “deserved” the attacks on September 11 and claiming Hamas was “1,000 times better” than Israel. Despite this, he continues to gain traction within the Democratic Party and supports progressive candidates like Michigan Senator Abdul El-Sayed.
On her end, Hong, who identifies as a democratic socialist, has also made contentious declarations in the past, advocating for defunding and abolishing the police. However, in a statement to Fox News Digital earlier this year, she seemed to backtrack on that perspective, expressing, “We cannot reduce public safety resources. I don’t like crime. I don’t like unsafe streets. I also don’t like members of law enforcement abusing their power.”
