Francisco Alvarez returned from the injured list in time for Tuesday’s series opener against the Marlins.
The Mets catcher has been out since April 19 with a torn ligament in his left thumb.
With Alvarez back in the mix, the Mets also had a decision to make about their backup catcher situation, with Luis Torrens staying with the team and Tomas Nido being designated for release.
Torrens was acquired from the Yankees last month to replace Omar Narvaez, who was released after a disappointing and expensive deal in Queens.
Torrence has impressed both as a catcher and offensively since joining the team.
Additionally, Washington Post reporter Mike Puma reported that Nido has enough work experience to turn down a move to Triple-A Syracuse.
