MINNEAPOLIS – Francisco Lindor announced Wednesday that he has won the “Captain” title, even for teams other than the Mets.
The star’s shortstop wrote on Instagram that he was once again nominated as team Puerto Rico captain in the world baseball classics next year.
“We are honored to be captain of Team Puerto Rico with the 2026 World Baseball Classic PR VAMOS MI Borinquén!” posted by Lindor.
Lindor has participated in each of Puerto Rico’s past two WBCSs.
In his first appearance at the 2017 event, he was named MVP for Pool D, making Puerto Rico 3-0. He was selected for the All-WBC team following Puerto Rico’s defeat in the United States in the Championship Game.
Team Puerto Rico’s final appearance at WBC before the 2023 season had a direct impact on the Mets.
Diaz was injured during a field celebration in Miami after Puerto Rico defeated the Dominican Republic.
The Mets have not won an official team captain since David Wright’s retirement in 2018, but Lindor’s name often emerged as a natural fit when the club decides to award the title to the player.
“I feel like I’m one of the leaders of the team,” Lindor said during spring training. “There are a lot of leaders out there. Captain. Francisco Lindor named Team Puerto Rico captain for 2026 WBC It’s something I can’t decide. When it happens, it will be an honor, it is a privilege. That’s something I never take for granted. It places me next to the greats of this organization. ”
