Frankie Montas in need of support receives backing from David Stearns of the Mets

MILWAUKEE

Despite differing opinions among Mets fans, the team’s president expressed his excitement at the prospect of Frankie Montas pitching against the Brewers. “I know he’s working really hard,” said David Stearns. “I look forward to seeing him get some outs.”

Montas is set to take the mound on Saturday or potentially pitch later in the game, though manager Carlos Mendoza held off on finalizing plans following Friday’s close 3-2 loss to the Brewers. Montas has been seen as a weak spot in the pitching lineup, prompting the organization to promote younger prospects like Nolan McLean and Brandon Sprout to get their chances.

His recent performance was disappointing, allowing seven runs over four innings during his last start against the Giants, leading to a 6.68 ERA across his seven outings this season.

Stearns hinted at some contradictions in Montas’s execution: “He tends to leave pitches in the middle. Even with his velocity, good hitters are going to capitalize on that.” He highlighted that limited flexibility in the roster contributes to decisions about keeping younger pitchers in the minors, noting the Mets essentially have one option available. “I utilized that spot for a fresh bullpen arm,” he explained.

“It’s all part of the equation,” Stearns continued. “The situation on the roster plays a part in how we properly manage their development. They do a great job.”

Stearns, who previously ran the Brewers front office before joining the Mets in 2023, reflected on the current season of his former team. The Brewers became the first MLB team to achieve 70 wins this season.

“I think everyone in baseball recognizes they’re having a great season,” Stearns remarked. “They’ve assembled a talented roster. Their ability to suppress runs is impressive, and offensively, they have a well-rounded lineup that can win in different ways. They’ve also excelled in base running. I genuinely appreciate their accomplishments.”

When asked if he takes pride in the success of the team he helped build, Stearns responded, “No, I’m with the Mets now. That team flipped when I was there. Still, I maintain good relationships with many individuals there. They’ve done an incredible job.”
