Frankie Muniz Reflects on Leaving Hollywood

Former child star Frankie Muniz, now 40, shared that stepping away from Hollywood during his peak was, in a way, a life-saving choice.

“Honestly, I didn’t enjoy life in LA,” Muniz said. “That’s why I moved to Arizona, and I really love it here. I feel like it saved my life. I appreciate the smaller things now, like hiking and just going to the grocery store without the hassle of finding parking or paying for valet.”

Known for his role in the hit sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle” from 2000 to 2006, Muniz left the entertainment industry in 2008 to pursue a career as a race car driver. “I’ve always been a big racing fan, but I never really thought about becoming a driver myself,” he explained. “Crossing that finish line first? It’s something magical, and that’s when I realized I wanted to experience it more.”

Despite enjoying success in family comedies like “Agent Cody Banks,” which earned $58.8 million, and “Big Fat Liar,” with $52.97 million, Muniz was determined to shift gears in his career.

“I wanted to be sure I wasn’t just racing for the sake of it,” he remarked. “I made a good amount of money, and I could afford to step back if I wanted to.”

He recalled having “maybe 60 days off” between the ages of 8 and 21, noting the high cost of fame.

When “Malcolm in the Middle” debuted, he was thrust into hectic schedules, with his mother waking him at 5 a.m. for interviews and fan mail. “You just had to deal with it,” Muniz remarked, reflecting on the intense demands.

He also mentioned not feeling like he missed out on a traditional childhood. Instead, he felt “excited” to have avoided the pressures of social media during his formative years. “People would ask if I was sad about missing prom. But honestly, I had some pretty memorable experiences at places like the Playboy Mansion with other celebrities,” he added.

Although Muniz transitioned away from showbiz, he hasn’t completely given up on acting. Over the last two decades, he has made guest appearances on several shows. Recently, Disney+ revived “Malcolm in the Middle,” with Muniz reprising his role as Malcolm alongside original cast members like Brian Cranston and Christopher Masterson.
