Fraud aftermath prompts Democratic Gov Tim Walz to drop his re-election campaign in Minnesota

Minnesota Governor Withdraws from Re-election Bid Amid Welfare Fraud Scandal

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced on Monday that he is stepping back from his campaign for a third term. This decision comes after facing significant backlash regarding his handling of a substantial welfare fraud scandal in the state, which has garnered both local and national attention.

In a statement, Walz remarked, “Republican political gamesmanship is only making it harder to win this battle.” He went on to express a personal reflection on the situation during the holiday season, stating, “I can’t do it.” He elaborated, saying that his time should focus on protecting Minnesotans from those exploiting the system and on addressing the issues at hand rather than engaging in political battles.

Having launched his campaign for a new four-year term in September, Walz has recently faced increased criticism from President Donald Trump, Republican leaders, and some members of his own party due to the fraud allegations. The scandal involves over 90 individuals, primarily from Minnesota’s sizable Somali community, who have been charged with participating in a large-scale scheme believed to be the most significant of its kind linked to the coronavirus relief efforts since 2022. Estimates indicate that the fraudulent activities could exceed $1 billion, involving various misuse of funds from programs aimed at providing food, housing, daycare, and Medicaid services.

Reports reveal that multiple individuals involved have admitted guilt, having used the misappropriated funds to purchase luxury items, real estate, and vacations, with some money allegedly funneled overseas to support terrorist activities.

Walz had previously acknowledged his responsibility concerning the scandal, declaring, “This is on my watch. I’m responsible. And more importantly, I’m the one to fix it.” He took measures to suspend certain payments suspected of fraud and initiated an external audit of Medicaid claims within the state.

Despite these actions, Trump has not held back in his criticism, labeling Walz as “incompetent” and using derogatory language to refer to him during his remarks. The scandal has intensified in visibility over the last few months, particularly after the release of a viral video by a YouTuber alleging widespread fraud at a Somali-operated daycare, prompting the Trump administration to freeze federal childcare funding to Minnesota shortly afterward.
