Nick Shirley Goes Viral After Exposing Alleged Child Care Fraud
Independent journalist and YouTuber Nick Shirley gained significant attention on Monday after replying to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office. His response was prompted by a post from Newsom’s team, which appeared to mock Shirley’s attempts to highlight alleged fraud involving child care centers that benefit from millions in federal funding.
Newsom’s office had shared an image of a man inside a daycare center surrounded by cameras, asking teachers, “Can I see the kids?” Shirley fired back, stating, “You know I’m trying to help rid America of fraud and waste, right? There’s no need to make me look like the bad guy for exposing wrongdoing. The people are done. Start working for the people instead of against them.”
Investigative Work Sparks National Focus
Shirley caught national attention previously when he released a video targeting fraud in Minnesota’s child care system. This 42-minute video showcased a daycare center that had received extensive government funding but seemed inactive. It went viral in December, amassing over 138 million views on X, leading to investigations by federal authorities and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
In January, he testified before the House of Representatives regarding the Minnesota fraud scandal, emphasizing the urgent need for reform in the system.
Shirley’s response to Newsom’s office quickly gained traction, earning more than 190,000 likes and over 20,000 reposts, even drawing reactions from notable figures online.
Shortly before this exchange, Shirley uploaded a new video titled “Investigating California’s Billion Dollar Fraud Crisis” to his blog. In this video, he claims the fraud he discovered in California surpasses that found in Minnesota, asserting, “We uncovered over $170 million in fraud as these scammers live a life of luxury with impunity.” He stressed that the issue persists because hardworking citizens are overtaxed, while fraudsters evade consequences.
Shirley did not provide an immediate comment when approached for further discussion. Newsom’s office referred any inquiries back to Fox News Digital.
