Fraudster made $750K reselling item from luxury rental sites: prosecutors

A Michigan woman was arrested Wednesday on charges that she pocketed more than $750,000 by selling more than 1,000 designer pieces she had acquired on a rental site.

Horn was charged with one count of mail fraud, one count of wire fraud, and one count of interstate transportation of stolen property.

If convicted, she could receive a total of 50 years in prison.

Prosecutors said Horn created hundreds of online accounts to obtain items from rental sites.

Prosecutors said the companies tried to charge Horne for the stolen items, but Horne either disputed the charges with the credit union or canceled the cards associated with the purchases. The claim could not be made.

They added that although her account was eventually flagged and shut down, Midwesterners will continue to open new accounts to obtain more luxury and designer goods for sale.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York began an investigation in June 2023 into Mr. Horne’s several aliases. One of the companies reported that Mr. Horn appeared to be selling the product as “Cash Horn” on Poshmark.

The company told Investigator Delessa Penland that Horn rented a Daisy Halter Maxi made by Mila Mikati, which retails for approximately $775, and was delivered to her on March 24, 2023.

The same dress was listed for sale on Horne’s purported Poshmark account, and was purchased by Penland under the name Michael Smith on October 23, 2023, along with a Cherie dress and other items. The order was delivered a few days later to a PO box in Manhattan.

The tags on both dresses contained residue on the labels, indicating that Horn likely removed the heat-sensitive tags.

The investigation revealed that Horn was suspected of selling 1,063 items stolen from rental companies.

The fraud suspect was scheduled to appear in Eastern Michigan District Court on Wednesday.
