DHS and DOT Investigate License Fraud at Truck Driving School
A joint investigation by the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Transportation is looking into truck driving schools. The focus here? Issues related to certification and falsified records linked to commercial driver’s licenses being issued to non-citizens. This scrutiny arrives after a series of deadly truck accidents involving undocumented immigrants, raising significant safety concerns on U.S. roads.
On another note, a new initiative called “Freedom Haulers” is being introduced by the Trump administration, targeting illegal immigrants and non-English-speaking truck drivers. At the same time, it plans to create better opportunities for veterans wanting to enter the commercial trucking field.
White House Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated that President Trump’s actions are aimed at making the roads safer. The Freedom Haulers initiative is designed to make it easier for veterans transitioning from military service to obtain commercial driving credentials.
President Trump, alongside key officials, will announce this initiative, which appears to blend a crackdown on illegal drivers with recruitment efforts for veterans. The move also aims to enhance the trucking industry, which plays a vital role in the supply chain.
The Department of Transportation intends to make it simpler for veterans to acquire a commercial driver’s license, extending their exemption period from 12 to 24 months post-active duty. Additionally, CDL training will be provided to veterans who may not have experience driving heavy vehicles while in service.
Furthermore, states like Indiana and Wyoming will join the “Equal Exchange” program to help military truck drivers transition more easily to civilian licenses. A Nebraska-based trucking firm, Warner Enterprises, is set to hire a significant number of veterans, up to 1,400, as part of this initiative.
Authorities are also committed to continuing their crackdown on those commercial drivers who lack the necessary English proficiency or are mistakenly licensed. Recent tragedies involving non-English speaking drivers have heightened the urgency of this action.
In a notable incident, a Pennsylvania State Police officer lost his life during a routine check when a semi-truck driver, who had obtained his license without a proper address, struck him. This kind of tragedy underscores the necessity for these regulatory measures.
According to the DOT, the Trump administration saw a 7.42% increase in real wages for truck drivers, contrasting with a reported decrease of 3% during Biden’s tenure. The data also shows that veteran drivers are involved in 42% fewer accidents and drive significantly more miles than their non-veteran counterparts. The overarching goal? To enhance safety on highways while fortifying the U.S. trucking workforce.
