French Jews fear they have “no future” in the country following the victory of the far-left in parliamentary elections over the weekend.
As Breitbart News reported, the alliance between French President Emmanuel Macron and the New Popular Front led to a victory for Marine Le Pen’s populist right-wing party and raised concerns about rising anti-Semitism.
Rabbi Moshe Sebag of the Victoire Synagogue said: Said of The Israel Times “It seems there is no future for Jews in France,” he said, urging young Jews in the country to go to Israel.
“But there are people my age, in their 50s and 60s, who live here and are worried about their children’s futures,” he said.
Moshe Sebag did not welcome the victory of the New Popular Front, but ultimately lamented the mainstreaming of anti-Semitism in general.
French-Jewish philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy said this weekend’s victory marked the rise of a “new anti-Semitism.”
“The left has once again been seduced by the notorious Mélenchon. Divisive words. Hatred for the Republic coming out of his mouth. Now he has surrounding him new avatars of anti-Semitism. A chilling moment. A stain. Keep fighting these people,” French-Jewish philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy wrote on X.
According to the outlet, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the far-left party Independencia France (LFI), has previously called French Jews “an arrogant minority that lectures the rest” and “in previous speeches he was on record praising anti-Israel protesters just days after some of them attacked a synagogue, and in those speeches he only condemned French Jews who demonstrated in solidarity with Israel.”
“Mélenchon’s victory sends a chilling signal to anti-Semitic Islamo-fascists that they will not be punished,” French-Jewish journalist Yohan Tayeb wrote on X.
Producer Charis Leah said: Epoch Timessaid in X that Mélenchon’s rise would create more stable insecurity for Jews.
“This would be a catastrophe for Jews because Macron would have to sit down with Mélenchon, who is essentially a deal-breaker and will demand a lot from Macron. Mélenchon is ruthless, power-hungry and a rabid communist, almost Antifa-level. So Macron is in serious trouble, because post-war France has no history of sharing such power. I think tens of thousands of Jews would leave the country,” she wrote.
What is happening in France essentially reflects the chaotic voting systems of Europe after World War II.
As I understand it, this French election is for the position equivalent to the prime minister, i.e. the National Assembly. It is not an election for Macron’s position, i.e. the presidency.

Like the United States and other Western countries, France has seen an upsurge in anti-Semitism since Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7. Last month, Breitbart News reported that “France’s Jewish community was horrified after a 12-year-old girl from Courbevoie was the victim of an anti-Semitic gang rape by a group of boys who allegedly dragged her to an abandoned building and raped her anally and vaginally.”
