French lawmakers have called for America to return the Statue of Liberty, claiming that America has lost its way and no longer represents what the symbolic sculpture represents.
“We're going to say, 'Please give the Statue of Liberty back' to the Americans who fired the researchers to demand scientific freedom from the Americans who chose along with the tyrant,” said Rafael Groeksman, a left-leaning French dip, at a recent convention for his party, Place Place, according to a French newspaper. Lady Liberty was designed by French sculptor Auguste Barttledi and was given to the United States as a gift from France. It was presented in 1886 at a dedication ceremony by then President Glover Cleveland in New York Upper Bay. Since then, the beloved statue has become one of the most enduring symbols of America and a beacon of freedom in the world.
The Statue of Liberty weighs approximately 450,000 pounds and is 305 feet tall, including a star-shaped granite pedestal.
