French Students Promise to Continue Nationwide Protests

Ongoing Protests Among French Students

Students in France have declared that their protests are just beginning, planning to continue their nationwide demonstrations, blockades, and boycotts for the foreseeable future.

According to reports, numerous rallies were scheduled across France into Friday, following a significant event at Place de la Bastille in Paris where protesters faced tear gas and water cannons.

The involvement of students alongside far-left political groups has led to an alarming increase in street violence throughout France over the past three weeks.

Since late September, police have arrested over 6,600 individuals, most of whom are students under 18, as they have been demanding increased funding for education.

The education ministry indicated that 375 schools were either fully or partially closed on Thursday.

In an address to the public, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu expressed concern over the escalating violence, noting that students and staff have been attacked, police officers injured, and schools vandalized or set ablaze, resulting in countless lost hours of instruction.

Lecornu criticized political leaders who exploit this unrest for their electoral gains, as France is headed for a presidential election in April to select a successor to President Emmanuel Macron.

“We cannot play with the safety of France’s youth,” he remarked.

In response, students have vowed to persist with their protests, with one student stating, “We’re here, we’re demonstrating, and we won’t stop. Until October, November, December if necessary. Nothing will stop us.”
