French Train Networks Partially Restored After Pre-Olympics Sabotage

PARIS (AP) — French national rail company SNCF said Saturday that sabotage had disrupted three major lines ahead of the Olympic opening ceremony scheduled for Friday night along the Seine, but work was underway to partially restore high-speed train services.

SNCF said crews worked through the night in bad weather to improve TGV services from the north, east and west of Paris, and that normal services had resumed on the eastern high-speed line as of Saturday morning.

“On average, seven out of 10 trains on high-speed lines in the North, Brittany and Southwest will be delayed by one to two hours,” SNCF said in a statement.

The company added that traffic on the Northern axis would remain disrupted on Sunday, but that it expected the situation on the Atlantic axis to improve over the weekend. Customers are being contacted by text messages and emails to confirm train services.

SNCF said that despite the disruption, all transport for Olympic teams and accredited personnel would remain on schedule.

The vandalism has raised security concerns as Paris hosts the Olympics, and French authorities say they are actively investigating, but so far no suspects have been identified or arrested.
