Corey Adams, an 18-year-old freshman football player at Ole Miss, was shot on Saturday night in Tennessee.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reported that Adams succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, following an incident near Memphis in Cordova.
Authorities found Adams with a gunshot wound inside a vehicle at an intersection.
“They provided life-saving measures until Shelby County fire personnel arrived,” the sheriff’s office stated. “Firefighters later pronounced the victim dead at the scene.”
In addition, four other men were injured by gunfire and taken to a local hospital.
Officials noted that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Adams was expected to enroll at Ole Miss this winter and planned to make his college football debut in the fall.
“We are heartbroken to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on the team, lost his life last night in Cordova, Tennessee,” wrote a representative in a statement. “Our program is coping with this tragic loss, and our thoughts are with his family during this extremely challenging time.”
“Out of respect for his family, we will refrain from further comments at this point. We urge the Ole Miss community to keep Corey in their thoughts and to respect the privacy of everyone involved.”
Hailing from New Orleans and a two-time all-state selection at Edna Karr High School, Adams was among the newest defensive linemen in the nation.
On Sunday, the Facebook account of the Edna Karr football team shared that they are “suffering and heartbroken” over the loss.
“Coley Adams was more than just a football player! He was everything to friends, brothers, sons, students, and a remarkable young man,” they posted. “We never question God, but this is a situation we can’t fathom. This isn’t the end of his story; it becomes #doit4co.”
