The Witcher Season 4: A New Chapter for Ciri

In the latest season of The Witcher, not only does Geralt of Rivia, played by Liam Hemsworth, experience transformations, but so does Ciri, portrayed by Freya Allan, who’s stepping into a new role. As fans dive into Season 4 on Netflix, they’ll be introduced to a different side of Ciri.

This season picks up from where Season 3 ended, with Ciri and the young outlaws, known as the Rats, navigating their way across the continent. Allan mentioned in a recent conversation that she views this season as a significant shift—a “loss of innocence” for Ciri.

When we reconnect with Ciri, who takes on the name Falka, she becomes involved in various criminal activities with the Rats. During this turbulent journey, she faces her first killing and discovers her first love with her companion, Mistle (Christel Erwin).

“Her first murder marks a turning point,” Allan explained. “We touch on many experiences in this season, but these moments—the first murder and her first intimate encounter—represent the bridge into adulthood that many of us face.”

Initially, Ciri comes under threat from another member of the Rats, Kaylie (Fabian McCallum), until Mistle intervenes. A tender moment follows as the two girls share a kiss in a vulnerable setting. This marks the beginning of their romantic journey.

Allan elaborated on the evolving relationship between Ciri and Mistle, highlighting that it’s not without its complications. “Ciri seems uncertain about what her relationship truly entails,” she remarked. “This dynamic allows us to see a different side of Ciri and aids in her self-discovery.”

Later in the season, Mistle attempts to bond with Ciri, who still clings to her alias, Falka. Ciri hesitates to disclose her background, prompting Mistle to question the depth of their connection. Allan shared that she incorporated lines from Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel for a critical scene between the two characters.

“We found a scene compelling where Mistle asks Ciri about their relationship, and Ciri expresses her fear of solitude,” Allan recalled. “Mistle’s response, ‘Is that all?’ followed by Ciri’s reaffirmation, ‘That’s all,’ really encapsulates their situation.”

Throughout Season 4, Ciri grapples with her past and her bond with her adoptive parents, Geralt and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra).

Reflecting on her character, Allan noted, “Mistle challenges Ciri to confront whether she can just run away from her true self.”

“Ciri harbors a desire to erase her past entirely and become Falka, a harsh and unfeeling persona,” she continued. “But ultimately, one cannot escape their origins, and that’s the critical question that Mistle raises for Ciri.”

Showrunner Lauren Hissrich pointed out the complexity in Mistle’s role: “Mistle seems to be probing at Ciri’s deeper layers. It’s about exploring genuinely human relationships.”

As expected, the romance between Ciri and Mistle darkens as the season progresses, but it remains pivotal to Ciri’s overall narrative arc in The Witcher.

For anyone eager to catch up, The Witcher Season 4 is now streaming on Netflix.
