Lewis Gill’s Challenging Season with the Yankees

Lewis Gill has been navigating a tricky path in 2025.

After coming back from a right-lat strain he dealt with in the spring, the Yankees pitcher boasts a respectable 3.31 ERA over seven starts.

Yet, it seems he’s relying on luck to maintain those numbers.

His performance has dipped in nearly every way compared to the previous season. If he keeps this up, it’s hard to see how he could secure the American League Rookie of the Year award—it feels like it’s just a matter of time before everything catches up to him.

In his 35 innings pitched, he has walked an astounding 23 batters, averaging 5.83 walks per nine innings.

Moreover, his strikeouts have plummeted, dropping from over 10 strikeouts per nine innings last season to just 7.64 this year.

Gill is known as a flyball pitcher, and worryingly, only 24.8% of his pitches are ground balls.

Interestingly, despite this trend, he hasn’t allowed a typical increase in home runs. His flyball rate per home run sits at just 4%, which probably isn’t sustainable.

His latest outing against the Red Sox epitomized his 2025 season: he allowed only one run while walking five batters and giving up four hits in five innings, striking out three.

The Road Ahead

It’s clear that pitching under such duress can’t last indefinitely.

Looking ahead to his next start against Boston, I have a feeling Gill’s luck may run out sooner than later.

It’ll be intriguing to see how it unfolds.
