Friendly’s Shrinking Presence
Once a popular casual-dining chain famous for its ice-cream desserts and burgers, Friendly’s has seen a drastic reduction in its footprint, going from around 850 locations to now fewer than 100 across 11 states.
Founded in 1935 in Springfield, Massachusetts, by the Blake brothers—Prestley and Curtis—Friendly’s started as a simple ice-cream shop. It’s interesting to think about how, during the Great Depression, they offered double-dip cones for just 5 cents. That’s quite a tale.
The company expanded in 1940, adding its first food items, including hamburgers. Fast forward to 1951, and there were ten Friendly’s restaurants, a figure that swelled to about 500 by 1974, with most located in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
Friendly’s celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2025. Throughout the years, it has diversified its menu, sold products in supermarkets, and even set a Guinness World Record for the largest sundae in 1980. They also changed their name slightly in 1989 by adding an apostrophe.
However, the brand has faced its share of challenges. Friendly’s changed ownership multiple times and filed for bankruptcy twice; first in 2011 and then again in November 2020. In 1979, Hershey’s acquired the chain but sold it off just nine years later. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster, isn’t it?
During its heyday in the mid-1990s, Friendly’s managed to grow to around 850 restaurants. But the tide turned, and today, about 90% of its locations have closed. Currently, only 87 restaurants remain, primarily in Eastern states. Notably, about 25% of those are in Massachusetts.
Marketing professor Barbara E. Kahn noted that some locations felt outdated and struggled to keep up with current trends. Yet, she believes there’s still potential in the Friendly’s brand. It’s interesting how nostalgia might play a role in reviving it; after all, many remember it fondly as a family-friendly place with tasty ice cream.
Kahn emphasized the brand’s potential to build on its legacy while modernizing its menu. She mentioned how McDonald’s has successfully evolved by adapting to consumer tastes, which might be worth considering for Friendly’s moving forward. Introducing healthier options, like non-meat dishes or salads, could attract a new customer base.
Ultimately, loyal patrons of Friendly’s often see it as a fun, welcoming restaurant that holds fond memories. So, if the chain can combine its nostalgic appeal with fresh, appealing offerings, there might still be a bright future ahead.
