From drug use on the PGA Tour to succeeding in LIV — Anthony Kim's remarkable return

Anthony Kim’s Inspiring Comeback

Anthony Kim, a professional golfer from California, made an incredible return to the sport on Sunday. This victory came three years after he rose from the depths of a severe drug addiction, which he had relied on to “numb the pain.”

As he celebrated his win at Australia’s LIV Golf Adelaide tournament, he embraced his four-year-old daughter, Bella. This marked Kim’s first professional triumph in nearly 16 years.

After the victory, Kim expressed disbelief at his achievement: “It’s pretty insane that that actually happened,” he said. “No one needs to believe in me but me. And for those who are suffering, you can get through anything.”

Roughly a year prior to this win, Kim candidly shared on Instagram that he had reached two years of sobriety, while also painting a stark picture of his past struggles.

Previously, while participating in the PGA Tour, he contemplated ending his life daily for nearly 20 years, he noted. Though he appeared successful after winning three PGA tournaments, he was secretly wrestling with addiction and mental health issues.

Kim recalled, “Every day, I chose drugs and alcohol to numb the pain I was feeling no matter what was going on in my professional life, and I was so good at hiding it that I lost sight of who I was.” He added, “It’s very difficult to play in a major and have to use the porta to go to the bathroom every few holes.”

Despite these challenges, he defied the odds, returning to form and securing a victory this weekend.

Kim had stepped back from the PGA Tour in 2012 due to a torn Achilles tendon. After a decade of keeping a low profile, he joined the LIV Golf Tour in March but initially struggled to regain his footing. A top-three finish at the LIV Golf Promotions event in January gave him another chance in the league this year.

His fellow golfers rejoiced as he turned a new leaf with this thrilling win.

Greg Norman, the former CEO of LIV Golf, hailed Kim’s win as “the greatest comeback in golf history.” He reflected on Kim’s talent that was “buried by bad decisions and poor direction.” Norman expressed pride in Kim’s journey, stating, “He was lost and he admitted it. But he owned it and wanted to use his power to change forever.”

Mark Leishman, a fellow LIV golfer, called it an “unbelievable story.” He spoke about how close Kim came to losing everything, not just in golf, but in life.

Lucas Herbert, after witnessing Kim’s victory, simply said, “I cried.”

Kim, born in Los Angeles in 1985, attended La Quinta High School near Palm Springs, where he distinguished himself by winning the Southern California High School Championship. He later pursued his education at the University of Oklahoma before relocating to Dallas, Texas.
