Former FBI Director James Comey finds himself in hot water as he attempts to clarify his controversial social media post about “86 47.”
During his appearance on Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night, he discussed this matter with his wife Patrice while being interviewed by Colbert.
Comey explained to Colbert that he intended the reference to be lighthearted—what he described as “a clever political message.” He recalled that when he was younger, “86” was a term used to suggest leaving a place, saying, “This place smells bad; let’s do it 86.”
Colbert seemed to grasp Comey’s explanation. He also noted he recognized the term “86,” particularly in the context of dealing with inebriated patrons. “As a bartender, if someone was too drunk, you just had to 86 them,” he remarked.

Comey shared a moment from a beach walk with his wife, where they spotted an unusual arrangement of shells. Patrice joked, “Did someone write an address in the sand?”
After a brief moment of contemplation, they inferred that Comey’s post might have been a “smart political message.” He acknowledged the term “86” while reflecting on his time as a restaurant server.
He also confirmed to Colbert that the Secret Service had reached out to him for a discussion.
According to Breitbart News, Comey took to Instagram to address the backlash from his actions and later removed some of the posted images.
“I shared some pictures of shells from our beach walk, thinking it conveyed a political message without any connection to violence,” he stated.
During his time on Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he was also there to promote his new book, titled “The Legal Striller: FDR Drive.”
