From Gun Control to Gun Patrol: Army and Over 120 Police Turn MSG into Fortress for Taylor Swift's Star-Studded Wedding

Taylor Swift’s Wedding with Travis Kelce Under Heavy Security

Pop icon Taylor Swift is set to marry Travis Kelce today at Madison Square Garden, and in light of her celebrity status, over 120 police officers will be on hand for security. This momentous occasion is expected to draw around 1,000 guests, including many notable figures from Hollywood.

Swift has long been an advocate for gun control. Following the tragic mass shooting at Parkland in 2018, she publicly supported the March for Our Lives movement and donated to their cause. In her heartfelt message to her 273 million Instagram followers, she expressed, “No one should have to go to school, concerts, nightclubs, or any place of worship in fear of gun violence.”

She elaborated further in her post, stating her donation was a way to demonstrate support for those affected by gun violence and to urge the need for reform. “I am so touched by the students, faculty, and families at Parkland High School,” she noted, recognizing those fighting for change to prevent such tragedies from happening again.

Following the Uvalde shooting in 2022, Swift again expressed her “anger and sadness,” advocating for stricter gun laws, according to a report from Newsweek.

As the Grammy-winning artist ties the knot in one of the most heavily regulated areas for gun ownership in the U.S., the presence of over 120 police officers adds another layer of protection.

TMZ has reported that more than 70 detectives from various precincts will be involved in the wedding security plans, along with over 50 police officers specifically assigned to Madison Square Garden. This heightened level of protection also includes higher-ranking members of the NYPD.

The March for Our Lives organization had previously rallied against proposals to arm teachers, emphasizing alternative measures for school safety. With ongoing calls for stricter gun control emerging again under the Biden administration after the Uvalde incident, the group’s voice remains strong in advocating for change across the country.

It’s an interesting juxtaposition—Swift, while a prominent supporter of gun control, will be surrounded by armed police as she exchanges vows. This irony isn’t lost on many observers.
