From the Oscars to Israeli detention: the attack on No Other Land director Hamdan Ballal – podcast | No Other Land

No other land won an Oscar earlier this month for its best documentary features. The film chronicles Masafa Yatta's West Bank community in order to resist being kicked out of the land by settler violence and the dismantling of Israeli forces. The film's two main characters, Palestinian filmmaker Basel Adora and Israeli filmmaker Yubal Abraham, gave a speech when they accepted the award.

Yuval Abraham: “We live in a regime that is free under civil law, and Basel is under military law that destroys his life. There is another path, a political solution without ethnic superiority, and the national rights of our people.”

Alongside the pair, the global spotlight was the film's other co-directors, Rachel Sezor and Hamdan Baral.

Adrian Hortonthe Guardian Us artist explains Michael Sapphi The challenges the film had to overcome during its production and the fact that despite its great critical success, other lands faced difficulties in preparing for the Oscar.

And on Monday, weeks after the awards ceremony, co-director Hamdan Baral was attacked by settlers and detained by Israeli forces. He explains to the Guardian correspondent Lorenzo Tondo What he believes that happened that night, and how he has experienced even more violence than before since Oscar won in the Masafayatta community.

Tondo explains that many analysts believe that settler violence is part of a broader attempt by the Israeli state to annex the West Bank during current President Trump. Horton also adds that the current US administration has created a calm effect on the distribution of several political documentaries.
