From trauma to truth: How Florida’s surgeon general found courage to challenge the pandemic narrative

On a recent episode of “Back to the People,” Nicole Shanahan interviewed Dr. Joseph Radapop, a Nigerian-American physician and health policy researcher who is now a surgeon general in Florida.

One of the subjects they discussed was Dr. Radapop's role during the pandemic. Unlike the majority of doctors who defended masks, social distancing and lockdowns, Dr. Radapop was brave enough to report the truth. “The government did that wrong.”

“Because of the early discoveries of lockdowns, you have elevated to national fame. You have studied the science of mask effectiveness and mask mandate and school closures. Like Jay Bhatacharya, you have come to the conclusion that the federal government is doing it wrong,” says Shanahan. “I still remember hearing about how Florida would reopen before any other states did it. It was really under your guidance and leadership.”

“To be honest, Governor DeSantis deserves all the credit,” says Dr. Radapop.

But his courage to speak the truth goes back to the tragedy of his childhood.

“I was a victim of sexual abuse,” he tells Nicole.

He added, “I developed my emotional development, the ability to connect emotionally with others.”

It wasn't until he became an adult when he met his wife and fell in love that he was finally able to deal with abuse in the past.

“My wife is so intuitive that she found a man named Christopher Maher, a Navy Seal. And he was a very talented healer and I ended up working with him… and that was the most transformative experience I could imagine,” says Dr. Radapop.

“What do you guess if we remove 95% of the garbage we carry around to protect ourselves? You will have more access to your love, you have more access to courage, you have more access to virtue.”

Nicole is shocked and encouraged by Dr. Radapop's vulnerability.

“You don't hear that level of integrity in general from people, especially people in the official government role,” she says. “You are a surgeon general. You are literally a mouthpiece for the health of your state, and it's so powerful to hear you use that position of power to speak of healing trauma and what comes from it.”

However, Dr. Radapop's story about his journey to happiness is not an isolated event. It is a signal that the tides in this country are changing, especially as they are related to health.

“Think about whether everyone in a position of power… did that kind of job,” says Nicole.

“The world looks completely different. For those who are undoubtedly in power, but for all because we are all powerful. We are all remorse of God's love, God's light and God's consciousness,” says Dr. Radapop.
