Diane Keaton passed away recently at the age of 79, leaving behind three notable relationships in her life.
Throughout her years, Keaton never chose to marry and seemed content with that choice. Yet, she shared significant connections with Woody Allen, Warren Beatty, and Al Pacino.
Later in her life, she became a single mother, adopting a 29-year-old daughter named Dexter and a 25-year-old son named Duke when she was in her 50s.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on her romantic history.
Woody Allen
Keaton’s initial public relationship was with Woody Allen.
She received an Oscar for her performance in Annie Hall, a film thought by many to have been inspired by their romance.
Their paths first crossed in 1969 when Keaton auditioned for a Broadway version of Allen’s comedy “Play It Again, Sam.” In his memoir, Apropos of Nothing, Allen mentioned being instantly attracted to Keaton, describing her as “lovable, funny, and completely original.”
As their relationship blossomed, they moved in together in Allen’s Central Park-view penthouse.
Many believe that “Annie Hall” is loosely based on Keaton, a notion she downplayed in a 1977 New York Times article, stating that while it isn’t entirely accurate, there’s a kernel of truth.
Ultimately, their relationship ended when Keaton returned to California to star in The Godfather, yet she collaborated with him on seven other films. They maintained a friendship over the years, and Keaton stood by Allen during the allegations made against him by his daughter Dylan.
In January 2018, she expressed her support, stating, “Woody Allen is my friend, and I continue to believe in him.”
Warren Beatty
Keaton was already in a relationship with Warren Beatty when they filmed Reds in 1981.
In her memoir, Then Again, she shared her long-time obsession with Beatty, sparked by his performance in the 1961 film, Splendor in the Grass. She admitted it felt surreal to be dating him.
In a 2017 HuffPost interview, she recounted that Beatty offered her valuable advice at a pivotal moment in her career.
She fondly remembered a flight from Los Angeles to New York, sharing, “I was so scared of flying…He walked me to the plane and held my hand during takeoff, then he kissed me goodbye and took the next flight back to LA. It was really cool.”
Al Pacino
Diane Keaton also had an on-and-off relationship with Al Pacino, her co-star from The Godfather series, which continued until after the filming of The Godfather Part III.
In an interview, she described him as “very attractive” and mused on how work can connect people, reflecting that sometimes it leads to something deeper.
Keaton once characterized Pacino as “simply the funniest guy,” expressing her admiration for his looks, saying, “Al’s face was like oops. Killer, killer face.”
In Pacino’s recent memoir, Sonny Boy, he recounted an incident where Keaton confronted his lawyer about Pacino’s financial standing, passionately declaring, “Do you know who he is?”
She highlighted that he deserved much more acknowledgment for being an artist and emphasized her protective instincts towards him.
