US telecommunications company Frontier has experienced a significant data security breach that compromised the personal information of many of its customers. The company has confirmed that the security incident resulted in the unauthorized disclosure of names and social security numbers of over 750,000 individuals. Frontier is currently notifying affected customers and reporting the incident to the appropriate regulatory authorities.

What happened in the Frontier data breach?
Frontier Communications has warned that a data breach has exposed the information of 750,000 customers. “On April 14, 2024, we detected unauthorized access to some of our internal IT systems. After an investigation, we have determined that personal information of our customers is included among the data affected by this incident,” reads a notice sent to affected customers.
of Notification sample A report filed with the Maine Attorney General’s Office censored the types of data that was leaked in the incident, but confirmed that the names and Social Security numbers of 751,895 customers were exposed. Bleeping Computer ReportFrontier assures us that no customer financial information was exposed as a result of the breach.
Frontier believes it contained the data breach and resumed normal operations soon after the attack, but the security incident also forced the company to partially shut down some of its systems to prevent threat actors from moving laterally through its network, which caused some disruptions to operations.

Who is behind the Frontier data breach?
Frontier has not revealed the exact source of the data breach but has acknowledged that a cybercrime group was behind it. “Based on our investigation, we have determined that the third party is likely a cybercrime group that accessed personally identifiable information, among other information,” the company said in a statement. Frontier has not publicly named the cybercrime group responsible for this attack, but it is worth noting that the RansomHub extortion group claimed responsibility for the attack on June 4th of this month, which calls into question the timing of Frontier’s data breach notification.
RansomHub says it hacked Frontier and stole the data of two million customers. The data reportedly includes personal information such as names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and email addresses, as well as details about Frontier’s services. RansomHub listed Frontier’s name on an extortion site on the dark web and gave the company a deadline to meet its ransom demands. If Frontier doesn’t meet its demands, RansomHub says it will sell the stolen data to the highest bidder.

What is Frontier doing about the data breach?
Frontier said it responded swiftly to the cyberattack. The company engaged leading cybersecurity experts to investigate and contain the intrusion, strengthened its network defenses to prevent future intrusions, and notified law enforcement and regulators.
The telecommunications giant is offering affected customers free credit monitoring and identity theft resolution services for one year. Frontier mentions a deadline for signing up but doesn’t specify a date. Act fast to ensure you receive compensation.

We commend the company for its steps to put things right, but this incident should never have happened in the first place if customers are entrusting it with sensitive information.
