Community Protests Against Crime on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens

District representatives for New York City’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have urged FBI director Kash Patel to take serious action against what they describe as a grave situation involving drug trafficking by organized crime in Queens.

Local activists have organized multiple protests in recent weeks, targeting a known brothel in the area. They claim that street-level transactions for sex are happening openly on the sidewalks, just before patrons enter the establishment.

This brothel is situated along Roosevelt Avenue, a notorious two-mile stretch recognized for crime, prostitution, and violence. Despite ongoing efforts by the NYPD, including over 350 arrests this year, the area still struggles under its “red light district” reputation.

In perhaps an ironic twist, some brothels are disguised as massage therapy businesses, creating confusion and leading to calls for them to be shut down. A local coalition, advocating for neighborhood safety, has written to Patel asking for investigations and enforcement actions regarding the ongoing issues in Roosevelt Avenue.

They’ve pinpointed eight locations believed to operate as brothels—seven within Ocasio-Cortez’s district and one nearby. The group highlighted at least five corners where sex work is alleged to occur.

While community leaders have acknowledged the police’s efforts, they argue that the problem has become so pervasive that only federal intervention can effectively dismantle the gang presence.

The coalition had previously contacted Patel in April, and shortly afterward, joint efforts by the FBI and DEA resulted in the arrests of eight suspected members from the violent 18th Avenue gang, who are accused of maintaining control over the area through brutal methods.

Despite these arrests, community members insist the gang’s influence is so strong that new enforcers quickly fill any gaps left by arrests. They have raised concerns about human trafficking and other illegal activities like fake ID distribution being linked to gangs operating within the area.

Ocasio-Cortez’s office claims that lawmakers have requested over $500,000 for programs aimed at addressing violence and supporting victims of sex trafficking. Representative Grace Meng has said she is in regular communication with local law enforcement about the crime situation, advocating for federal resources to help address local issues.

While a recent crackdown by the NYPD involved deploying over 200 additional officers, the processes to close illicit establishments have been slow, leaving residents frustrated. Community members feel that crime negatively impacts families, particularly children witnessing the troubling situations on their streets.

At a recent rally, spokesman Rosa Sanchez stated, “We can’t continue to expose our community to such tragedy. It’s a heartbreaking reality that needs immediate action.”

Former state senator Hiram Monserrate echoed these sentiments, asserting that while progress has been made, much work remains. He called on the FBI to revisit complaints about human trafficking and local assaults, emphasizing the need for broader measures to protect residents.
